You and the finances of your future
You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you.
— Dave Ramsey.
Hey all. I’ve created this blog to speak to all my regular middle class living parents out there, and also the aunts and uncles out there, like me. Hindsight is always 20/20, but man, I wish my parents, or even high school, taught me the fundamentals of money and how it works.
If you’re amongst my generation, you were the 1st and/or 2nd generation attending higher education past high school. Me, I attended a private liberal arts college. I received a good education, but you know what else came with it? Major DEBT! My dad was very frugal but willing to let me make my own decisions. He suggested other schools less expensive, but I was hell bent on this school, for whatever reason. I don’t know what I was thinking. I actually had a full scholarship at a public university that I passed on……
Like I said, my dad was frugal but my mom was the opposite…..So, I was screwed. I obtained employment while in high school and continued in college but I truly had no knowledge of how to spend smartly. Mistakes with money continued to happen. It all started with Discover Card Services visiting our campus and it was down hill from there.
If you’re like me, it took you many years to get back above water or you’re still working on it. I own up to all my financial mistakes, BUT! How would your life be different if you were taught financial education while in school and at home. Life would be a lot easier to manage, at least I think so. As an Aunt, I’ve started doing my part by using any opportunity to teach finances in a fun way. Parents, for the sake of your children, please start doing the same and help your kids start the path of adulthood, without one step already back because of debt.
